.

Our squad has a chance for a few individual champions as well as a chance to improve upon last years finish. I was discussing with my assistant coach this morning the difference between track and field and other sports championships. In track and field it is very rare, if not impossible if an 8th seed in a conference defeats the best team in the conference, where as in softball, baseball or another spring sport this happens quite often. As a coach at a developing program, where we may be a year or two away from challenging for a conference title (Plattsburgh has won one men's track and field title and no women's track and field title's since its inception in the 1960's), how do you motivate your athletes to fight for 4th or 5th place when first place gets all the glory?

If you stay grounded/ realistic and compete within yourself as an individual and a team you can leave the meet satisfied. Our men were 5th last year and women were 6th. That was after finishing 6th and 8th respectively indoors. This year we finished 7th indoors on both sides, and I think a good goal would be to come away 5th on both sides, and score more points than in 2008. As a team that is primarily freshman and sophomores it is important to come away with improvement as each year passes.

Last year's stats: Men placed 6th with 69.5 points; Women placed 6th with 63 points. The men graduated a huge point scorer in Jeff Dobson who won the 400 and anchored the winning 4x400, he also scored in the 200 and anchored our 4x100. The women lost captains and All-American's Toni Wiszowaty, Alyssa Recny and Allison Busby. These are big shoes to fill, but I think we can come away with better finishes and more points!
